Today, Dr. John Henner is co-owner and operator of Cabo Yacht Charters, a luxury yacht charter company based in Los Cabos, Mexico. Dr. Henner met Dan Mason three years ago when he chartered his private boat and found his new calling. The synergy between these two serial entrepreneurs flourished and now the fleet of Cabo Yacht Charters has grown to include four vessels of different sizes:
• Neoprene: a 108-foot black Mangusta, the largest and most distinctive of
the fleet
• Number Juan: a 100-foot Azimut Jumbo, named for the high-end boutique
tequila company in which Henner is also partnered
• Heather Nikki: an 80-foot Azimut, the Mason’s original boat named for Heather Mason, Dan’s Wife
• Olivia Grace: a 60-foot Viking Princess – Named after Mason’s daughter adopted from a local Orphanage
Dr. Henner’s evolution from a dairy farm in Wisconsin to yacht owner in Los Cabos is an interesting story. The farm life and his parents taught him work ethic, entrepreneurship, and compassion, but he also learned that he didn’t want to be a dairy farmer for a living. So he joined the military, where he started as a combat medic and was trained as an EMT, paramedic, and nurse before transferring from the Army to the Air Force.
While in the Air Force National Guard he studied medicine at Midwestern University in Chicago and was trained in emergency medicine at Wright Patterson Air Force Base. He finished his military career at Nellis Air Force Base in Las Vegas, then bought an emergency medicine company. A board-certified doctor in emergency medicine, Henner owned and managed the practice and also saw patients. When he sold the company, it was time to find new pursuits. You may be wondering, how a young protege dairy farmer from landlocked Wisconsin arrived in Las Vegas finally to find himself a charter yacht owner fulfilling his passion of being on the water and living his dream job in Los Cabos, Mexico.
“One of the reasons I have this company is that I didn’t have any other focus other than work for a long, long time,” Henner says with a laugh. “I had a partner in emergency medicine, and when we sold the practice, he had a lot of hobbies. He had plenty to occupy him. I went nuts for about 18 months when I couldn’t figure out what to do, and my wife said you have to find something to do. You’re driving me nuts!”
Henner’s partner, Dan Mason, is the founder, vision and inspiration for Cabo Yacht Charters. Mason shared similar passions for boating and the ocean led him to his first yacht purchase.
