Mike Tornabene: The Man Behind BroScienceLife & Dom Mazzetti

He turned gym bro culture into a comedy franchise. Now at 40, Mike Tornabene is thinking about what it actually means to age well.

If you've spent any time in gym culture over the past decade, you know Dom Mazzetti — the hyper-confident, aggressively shallow bro character Mike Tornabene created for BroScienceLife. The character is a parody, but like all great parody, it works because it's built on something real: the genuine subculture of American gym masculinity, with all its obsessions, anxieties, and moments of accidental profundity.

The Comedy of Fitness Culture

"The character only works because the real thing exists," Mike explains. "And the real thing exists because fitness is genuinely important to a lot of men, and there's not a lot of space where they can talk about that without being serious or being mocked. Dom lives in that space."

"I'm funnier about the gym than almost anything else because the gym is where I actually pay attention."

Aging Gracefully (Sort Of)

At 40, Mike is thinking more explicitly about longevity — something the Dom Mazzetti character would find deeply uncool. He talks about sleep, stress management, the things the "gains at all costs" mentality of his twenties didn't leave room for. "I still train hard," he says. "I just train smarter. And I sleep eight hours. Dom would never."
